Christmas Eve Lanterns

Every Christmas Eve, an entire neighborhood near the corner of Hall and Breton (In Grand Rapids, Michigan) puts paper lanterns along the road in front of their houses. People drive their cars (many with headlights off) through the winding roads to enjoy the sight.

I don’t know when this tradition started, but my mother-in -law says she remembers putting out the lanterns when she was a kid. If anyone can provide any more information about this beautiful tradition, please let me know.

The neighborhood I lived in during my last two years of highschool used to do this. It was a simple, beautiful way of bringing the community together during the dark days of winter. I loved it. Thanks so much for sharing this video – it’s beautiful.

  2. Not sure, but I really like it.

    Kinda cool, kinda eerie!
Most of the places I’ve lived in would have had the bags kicked down or thrown around.
    NY is NY i guess.

That was really nice. Felt very much like a dream state. I’d love to take a drive through something like that.

Something special, for sure. The beauty of the creative gesture. Wonderfully done.

We could do something like that where I live in Texas… but the snow beneath them really makes them so much more beautiful… I’m afraid we won’t have that.

  7. Levois says:

A great tradition the snow only heightens it.

Oooh! I love this! A little town in Pennsylvania I used to spend Christmas in did it every year! It was my favorite thing to see. So quaint and lovely.

Calm and quiet – what Christmas is supposed to be.
