I finally got my new camera. My Canon HV20 shoots in 4 modes: DV, Widescreen DV, 24p HDV, and StandardHDV. This video was shot in DV mode which shows off better low light performance, warmer colors, and a little bit more detail. However, I eagerly await Monday when I can edit the HD footage with my new iMac and really show what this camera can do. For now, enjoy what may be the last 4×3 video on this blog!

wow once the light went you could really see the benifit!
So when you film in HD are you going to start posting your footage oin HD?
The new cam takes in a lot of light.. to the point where sometimes you looked pale compared to the old camera. Have you played with the settings?
Thank you so much for posting this! I have been lusting after the new cameras because I thought they would dramatically improve my videos. The truth of the matter is, you’re an excellent photographer (videographer? filmer?). Sure, the film “looks” better on your new camera, but the real talent in this video came from your editing.
Ken Rockwell was right: “Your camera does not matter.”
AWESOME new camera… cant wait too see your new videos in HD! Sorta like the relief of awesomeness that came when rocketboom switched to HD 16:9…
Have fun saving up for your iMac! I’m sure it’ll pay off!!!
this camera is great and it’s the one I would like to buy since the presentation on the market, thanks to your test now I decided, the color, the light everything seems to be better
That’s a good investment. I can really tell the difference.
That was awesome to see the side by side comparisons. I’ve always have been a fan of Canon and truly believe they have better looking footage. Can’t wait to see more stuff with it.
Pretty decent quality in low light. Nice to go through the whole hardware upgrade cycle.
Congratulation!
I just bought one last week. And I can say it’s the best consumer HD cam in the market. Did you try the 24p with cinema mode? it’s fun
I think twitter said you got your iMac?
Great way to do a comparison.
I have the iMac 24inch. Just bought it. Fabulous machine.
I’ve been following the Lynda.com Final Cut Pro training videos and they suggest you use a separate hard drive for your footage otherwise eventual problems arise. Having the computer do all the work can lead to processor and application conflict and thus dropped frames, freezes etc. (Not sure how this effects newer macs but I suspect the possibility of conflict still exists. I went for a separate drive.)
I’ve recently bought a Lacie 500 gig drive (which crashed incidentally after a few weeks and had to be replaced with the loss of everything I had on it!) and I dump the footage to that. Thought I’d mention this so you could factor in the extra expense if you decide to go the separate drive route.
Well, no wonder you’re dying for the FedEx man to arrive!
That camera does very, very nicely in such low light and the colors really do look richer. Congrats on the new toys!
ees nice!
gotta love the 3 chip! I bet you’ll still use the hc20 though.
Welcome to the HD world. Congrats on the new camera and whoa does the side by side show the difference or what. Look forward to seeing the new 16:9 posts.
Oh man from that footage im sold on that hv20. So many choices of HD cam!
technology is amazing. i have to agree with laura though – your talent is what makes the equipment something to lust after.
Very cool! I like the split screen effect.
Great Camera… Good that you shot footage from the new camera and old at the same time for a better comparation. Great Idea!!!
Have you shot with a Sony before?
Josh, I’m enjoying your work. You’re a clever and talented videographer. I just finished watching your Scottish Highlands video on “XWhaves: Where is The Digital Wave Taking Us?”, the WGBH lecture, August 1, 2005, in conjunction with Woods Hole Film Festival. I think it’s great the way video from your videoblog is the highlight of that workshop discussion, and I like the way your work exemplifies the videoblogosphere.
You’ve inspired me unto the videoblog path. Thanks!
And there’s just one more thing about your delightful technique that fascinates me. I’m wondering if you’ll tell me exactly how you achieved the side by side camera/video in this New Camera video. It’s impressive. How did you do it? Please feel free to email me with a brief description.
Thanks again!
Great work
