We’ve got a regular Mr. Wizard here!

  2. claire says:

Instead of washing the mouths of potty-mouthed children out with soap, good parents can now punish their children by making them eat the dreaded Ivory soap souffle…

    Cool experiment!

  3. Trevor says:

    I think we have a new medium for abstract art . . . . .

  4. Cuoredifango says:

    what is that?
a soap that came from another planet?!?!?!?

  5. Evan says:

Where did you hear about these two “experiments”? The microwaving was really cool. Who knew that that could happen.

Huh. Thanks for the lesson; I’ve been using Ivory soap for years and didn’t know any of that. Now I have to go home and microwave a bar.

  8. Chris Daniel says:

Josh, I think you should do a segment every now and then where you microwave a new random object. Next episode.. something metal.

  9. Eric Lorentz says:

We did that a long time ago, not sure if we used ivory or not. We also put a few CDs in the microwave… that gets interesting, but I wouldn’t advise doing that in a microwave inside your house.

  10. missb says:

I’m going to the store right now for some Ivory…I want a soap soufflee!! What else can you microwave that sort of explodes safely…Twinkies, perhaps?

  11. If you had any guts, you would have demonstrated the soap soufflé in the shower! :-o

  12. Mark says:

    WHOA! That was awesome! :D
I wanna do that. But I only have Dove & Irish Spring bar soap.
Does it work with either of those, or is it exclusively for Ivory?

  13. Jen says:

Mmm… that looked delicious. Can you eat Ivory soap too?

  14. Nate says:

    Bill Nye, Jr.?

I particularly enjoyed the moment when you almost tasted the soap!–a force of habit, I can imagine, for anything coming out of the microwave.

Soap dough? Not really–soap is basically lye and oil mixed together in a balanced ratio. Rachel and I make our own . . . we’ll have to do a vlog on that some day (when we’re actually living under the same roof again!!!)

  15. Juan says:

    Interesting.
What would happen with another brand of soap?

  16. Liane says:

It’s pretty scary but that made me hungry.

  17. Michael Tyas says:

Can you actually wash your hands with that sculpture? I’d use that for festive gatherings.

  18. Anthony says:

Here you go. It took me a while to get these posted. But I have attempted the experiment. Even got some of my friends to try it too. Here are the pics of my first time nuking Ivory:

Always a pleasure to watch. Non soap related question, what is the name of that piece of music you play in the background? I find it to be sublime.

  20. SlyW says:

What is the music playing in the background during the cooking?!?

  21. SlyW says:

Oh dear.. the name of the music is staring me in the face. My apologies.

  22. kim says:

looks like a big plate of mashed potatoes…mmm…gravy…

i’m impressed that you are tall enough to have your microwave on top of your fridge!

  23. Nox says:

Every day I do at least one insane thing, justifying it to anyone who asks by claiming it’s “for science.” It’s nice to see a kindred spirit.

  24. Jeremy David says:

Ha ha reminds of me Bill Nye the Science guy. I’m actually really happy that I posted that picture of you, because if I had not, I never would have started watching your videos. Hahahah damn you! It was your plan all along.

  25. More dangerous, but just as interesting: plasma!
