I am glad to see people trying to keep the local news media accountable for what they put on the air. Ideally, the news wouldn’t be about advertising and ratings, but function solely as a service to the community. It would report news because people need to know it, not because it is dramatic and will get them good ratings for that week.

Nice piece Josh. Networks like to make us afraid of where we live for some reason. I wish they would focus on the positive, but all they care about is getting a “good” story. I think that’s why vlogs are important.. we can turn things around.
Very nice job, Josh. Looked like a professional news cameraman shot it! Also glad to see some community-based vlogging going on. Cheers.
Nice work!! Hopefully between your coverage, and the protest, people will realize that networks don’t always report things accurately. Great citizen journalism!
this is a great work, something that seems made by a professional network
you always disappoint me with your great works
Oh man. “The sound of gunfire often drowns out the positive voices.”
I’m so glad people didn’t stand for this. Good job Josh.
Excelllent work Josh in interviewing, editing and putting together a very relevant piece. Look forward to more like this.
This was excellent and inspiring!
Impressive, Josh. I was glad to hear that people came out and protested that coverage – and I wouldn’t have had a clue if you hadn’t done this piece. Thanks!
Josh, thank you for doing this. You did a really great job. Would it be too much trouble to get a DVD version from you? I want the block clubs and neighborhood leaders to see this and some of them do not have easy access to the internet. You can e-mail me at robinsonkmpl@gmail.com.
Right on! Good for them for standing up to such negative news reporting and good for you for pounding the pavement and checking it out! Extra bonus brownie points for splicing in the news footage!
Very nice piece. Keep up the good work.
From a SE sider I thought Wood’s coverage was not very accurate..
Hey Josh,
Nice job putting that together and putting the effort in to tell the story.

WELCOME TO AMERICA – this is type of news programming is nation-wide and has been and everyone knows it. It feels great to know that everyday citizens are doing something about it. -I’m such a slut for sociopolitical vlogs.

What a great piece…what power you have with your camera and vlog! Thanks for giving these residents a voice! I don’t live in GR but am still so thankful that you were there to cover their story.
great job, josh. you always find very interesting and thought provoking topics. now, you need to come make the same video here in memphis.
This summarizes everything that is so cool about videoblogging and new media in general. if you hadn’t been there not many people would have heard from that protest. But you were there with your camera, and now the whole world (and i mean that literally; i for example am half a world away) will hear about it. Great job, and keep on blogging
Hey wanted to say nice vlog. I was looking through Bre’s of “I Make things” blog and discovered yours. I was really impressed and subscribed through itunes.Plus we’re fellow midwesterners (I’m chicago, illinois) so I try to support. Anyway, keep up the good work.
yeah man… it’s good that you are there
video blogs totally shows what the real life is all about!!
Yeah Even I’m far away from the states…
now I know…..
hmmmmmmmmmmmm
Cool! Keep it up!!
“News?” How about “info-tainment.” Just listen to that cool, intense, adrenaline-pumping voice-over of the video montage in that news story. Way too exciting for evening news. Between the GR Press and News 8, you’d think that GR was the murder capital of Michigan. And why in the blessed name of Dutch immigration would the news companies want to make Grand Rapids seem tough and ghetto? Perhaps to justify the further suburbanization and individualization of everything . . . “It’s just not safe. You’ll have to start working at home and shop online.”
Anyway, before I make a fool of myself for ranting, posts like this reveal the major problems of our media system (I think everyone else before me already pointed this out). People are too inclined to let others speak for their cities and communities, too inclined to point fingers at the problem than to offer solutions, too happy to fall for the temptation of status quo in their own lives.
What about Grand Rapids as a whole? What has it done? What about you, news-viewer? What have you done?
You’ve helped to highlight the issue. Now where do we go to keep it from happening again?
Josh, I discovered your vlogging through the wired article, as no doubt many did. I really enjoy what you’ve done. Keep up the good work!
Great post!
Josh, Thanks so much for putting this piece together, and in a way, giving people a real voice. I’m impressed by your vlogging endeavor and enjoy seeing it periodically. Noah
JL- this is a great one and important as a model for other vloggers and ocmmunities to see how the conversation can turn. I’ll be using it in my class this fall. Good work! – Dave
it’s awesome that they stood up and got their voices heard
it’s double awesome that you documented it so the moment was not lost.
did channel 8 see this video?
they should.
You did an excellent job putting this together. It seems like you treated both sides fairly and did research before just telling the story of the people who were protesting. That shows wisdom that is pretty cool. It is great and exciting to see people expressing there concerns and bringing about positive change. Thanks for using this medium to share an important issue and to example for us how easy it can be to find out about important issues effecting our communities. Thanks for sharing as you do.
Wow Josh. Really fantastic work. You must have put a lot of time into this one. That’s so cool that they had gumption to protest the lame TV coverage of their neighborhood.
lol r u joking…lol i have a boy from gr and a boy from wyoming, mich lol they say this is a joke…the se side really aint that bad…espeacially compared 2 my neighborhood in east palo alto in the bay area…remeber in the 90s it had the murder capitol…and the city was only 10,000 people and 45 murders …gang violence like crazy…and in cali …we would look at this as a joke…we got plces like east oakland…west oakland…marin city …richmond…stockton ….we dont have people nation/folks…we got real bloods n crips n nortenos…serious gangsters…u cant walk in another block without being shot…people r 2 crazy…now i know michigan is hard…but come on gr…lol …youll see hard when u enter east palo alto and east oakland…ull see
