Back Channel

Posted on Thursday 2 March 2006

You see what I allow you to see. But there is always a “Back Channel.” Conversations taking place, work being done, media being made.

All this footage is from my everyday life. It was filmed with my little digital still camera. Looking for a new apartment, hanging out with friends, driving around town, concerts, shopping, eating and drinking, it’s all there. With the push of a button, I have recorded my life. The good times and the bad. It comforts me to watch it. Hopefully, it will have a similar effect on you.

Music: Yann Tiersen - Loin Des Villes

Always neat to see how you can take the seemingly ordinary and make it interesting.
I can’t believe you got video of getting a ticket! Stinks you got a ticket thanks for catching it on video.

it seemed you had a bunch of little videos you were trying to make.
    instead they became a meta-video.
what i like is how every little moment was a whole story. Its a lot of info packed into a short video.

Josh, honey, PLEASE, PLEASE clean that bath tub! AND PLEASE don’t kill the lady bug! Don’t think of the hole as a bad thing, call it a “feature!”

I solemnly swear to comment more on your vlog than Michael Tyas.’ Well, at least I’ll try! But that’s gonna be hard cuz he posts more than anyone else I know. Nice podcast BTW. Did you post it on Stone Farm?

Oh well, I love your recent vlog. Love it! Love it! Love it! K, bye.

I liked the stream of moments that do create the essence of this post…your life, your ordinary life becomes this ball of fire we must hold dear, burning our eyeballs, it moves with great speed…however one thing I was recently told by a buddist priest…the more one tries to control/record/edit/understand this essence, I guess he was talking about life…the closer ones becomes to meeting his maker…perhaps a negative aspect to vlogging, yet I cant be too sure…I think he was disciple of a buddist sect called zairinshu…yet don’t hold me to it…劑凛宗??? not sure, anyhow this was great video…

A pleasing amalgam of clips. Nicely done. I have dealt with infestations of ladybugs, even to the point of shooting one with a blowgun (after leaving many fruitless dart holes in the wall.)

Aw, come on…you know you don’t hate ladybugs…do you?

I loved this video. A long string of little moments that aren’t necessarily related but add up to–well–daily life!

    Super!

I liked this video. I liked the amount of editing energy you put into pacing all this footage. There were like a million cuts in there and they were all placed perfectly! Thanks for another great window into the life of josh leo.

ps. the cutlery through the hole in the closet had me cracking up!

pps. i love ladybugs, but when they infested my apartment years ago I found that their lady-bug poop smells really musty!

I really enjoyed that Josh. A litte different from your usual style it seems.

Of course, what is your “usual style”? I not sure I can or want to peg it down, but there is definitely a Josh Leo style and this video extends it.

Hold the presses. Flash! Steve Jobs just called and sez Ken Burns Effect is out and Josh Leo Style is in. :)

I agree, it’s amazing how you can take ordinary life and turn it into something like that. So much better than “reality” TV! Even better, I know you! Well.. kind of :)

Josh Leo, you have a far too interesting life. And ya . . . it was a very . . . . unique vlog . . . I liked how you crafted the scenes with the music . . . The beginning was interesting in its own way . . . the ranting about the shower . . . the wallpaper . . . the ladybug was brilliant. It added some comic relief . . . the police ticket was a fine addition. Was the officer hot? I couldn’t tell . . . You should have stalked her or something . . . did a vlog commentary on a jail cell . . . interview your “neighbours”. And I’m sure you could have done so much more. Nonetheless it was a superb vlog. Kudos.

Josh Leo, I think this is one of your strongest posts. I throughly enjoyed that montage of Life coming from you. I can’t believe you video taped getting your speeding ticket. I think that’s againist the law, but you’re Josh Leo so I doubt they’ll be coming after you anytime soon.

P.S. I listened to the ENTIRED Podcast you and Mike did. Oh buddy.

A new apartment might be fun. What about a loft unit? Or maybe some kind of work/live space sorta thing? Probably hard to find.

    Back Channel to Background.
Do I see “een friese vlag” (a flag from the province “Friesland” in the Netherlands) behind you?
Visible from the 17th till the 20th second.
Is there a story behind it?

    My story:
I was born on a island called Ameland (lots of dunes) that’s part of Friesland. Lived there for most of my childhood. Therefore I was quite surprised to see it in your video.
