Me and Sen. Edwards

Posted on Friday 3 June 2005

I got an e-mail from Amanda from Rocketboom about two weeks ago. She told me, and a few other people, that Senator John Edwards was starting a video blog and they needed some questions to be sent in. They asked us to be the first bunch of people to start this ball rolling so this is the product of that.

It is pretty cool that a politician is using this medium as a great way to communicate with the country, I can see this being a pretty normal thing for other politicians in the near future! It kind of reminds me of Roosevelt’s “Fireside Chat’s”

I put the original question, his response, and my blooper reel together for this one. His Video Blog is located here: John Edwards Video Blog

Me and Sen. Edwards

Forgive me for the silent profanity, But I think it is ok to swear at yourself.

    OMG! That’s AWESOME!

Finally, a way for us to actually communicate with these people. It’s about time, we’re only on the 21st century!

    This is FANTASTIC!

the fact that we’re so giddy about communicating with our representatives is disturbing, doesn’t one agree?

perhaps it is only recently that the separation of citizen and state has occured..

Congrats on your question to Sen. Edwards! Videoblogging may turn out to be just what this country needs to instigate a political revolution (and boy howdy do we need a revolution of some sorts).

Your mug, no, your VLOG, could end up in history books, which in the future will probably be electronic and contain vlogs!!!

    Scene from the future:
Class, open up Vlog # 567-001. A clip of President George W. Bush opens… “Rarely is the question asked: Is our children learning?” Class erupts in laughter. Teacher says, “Ok, class, go to #567-002.” The president appears on screen with furrowed brow saying, “I know how hard it is to put food on your family.” Students fall out of chairs and onto the ground.

Anyway, kudos and thank you sooooooo much for the blooper reel. You. are. so. funny.

well, now who’s A-list? Meetings with Rocketboom … and political big wigs! :D

    Go Josh!

Good Question. I hope we see this as a continued thing and not just something that drives traffic to a site for a while and then ends.

I believe him when he says he wants more questions to keep this going … lets all send him some! :-)

Anyway - way to represent, Josh, thanks!

Good question. I’m not American so I have no idea who he was but its still good. I liked the bloopers even better, we all can’t get it right the first time (or second or third or forty fifth…)

Of course your question was a great one, and one that a lot of us, I believe think about. I’m pretty sure Jesus was nto republican. The bloopers were particularly good and, I must say, I’m disappointed he didn’t answer the one about the polar bear.

Not sure why people seem so shocked about talking to governmental person.

I have had a few conversations with different elected official and people running for office. Now it has never been anyone as high as the President or VP but it is actually quite easy to talk to your House of Rep, rep and with some work a Senator. Call their office and see if they have time to talk to a citizen. I know the Mayor of Grand Rapids used to have one evening a week designated to talk to people who cared to call and setup an appointment. You simply have to take the initial to create the conversation with them.

Basically it comes down to get off your butt and go talk to them. Don’t like what they are doing, go talk to them. Want them to know how a piece of legislation effected you in positive/negative manner, schedule some time and talk to them.

It is not difficult and it is simply called being politically active.

    begin rant

It is this lack of motivation to get involved that has led the youth vote to rarely be a factor in the 32 years since 18-year-olds have been eligible to vote and where in the last two elections they only comprise about 35% of the vote. When I hear someone complain about the government the first thing I as is if they voted. Chances are, if they are honest, they will say no. I respond with, then shut the hell up since you did not participate you can’t complain.

    end rant
