Vlogs…What an exciting new development I find myself in the middle of! I have been thinking a lot about Vlogs and their implications. This is my first rant video… I hope you enjoy it. I would love if this started a video conversation, in fact I encourage it. (Sorry to all my non-vlogging friends, but this post is pretty much geared towards those who are familiar with the Vlogosphere) I don’t mean to say that the popular vloggers are less approachable, I just think that they are somehow more powerful…

Vloggers mentioned in this post:
Ryanne, Jay, Verdi, Steve Garfield, Chris Daniel, Phil Hamilton,
Raymond, Jonny Goldstein, Aaron Flores
Kick ass!
Keep ‘em coming. I’m watching.
What school are you going to? There’s got to be one in New York that you’d like.
I wish my arm was a little longer because when I videotape myself the camera is too close and it makes my big nose look even bigger. So yeah, I need longer arms and longer legs.
What’s a respectable comment count? Dylan got like 50 on one of her videos. I’ve never come close to half of that.
Alright, I don’t really have anything else to say right now.
This is one of your best yet, I think you do a great job getting across your ideas while keeping it interesting. props yo!!!
Wow, I feel like I’m on the out skirts as well. Thanks for mentioning me. Good to know people are watching my videos.
3:00am? Ever since I’ve started videoblogging, I go to bed at the same time. How weird?
Yes the ship has left port and set sail, it’s speed is swift, and the sea chaotic, but don’t sweat it, you’re on it with us all…the ship of fools.
yo
ummmm
yeah this isnt a freakin popularity contest like middle school.
sure it might seem like a clique
but it’s only because we all like each other so much that we want to communicate and make videos with/for each other constantly.
and sometimes some of us feel the deep need to connect in person (jay and i moved in together! verdi and shannon are visiting nyc for a month) etc etc.
the vlogger cruise ship is not complete without you
and the countless others that will come after you.
it’s not about us, it’s about the greater whole. sure the feedburner numbers are nice, but what they’re really showing is not “i have more readers than you!” it’s showing that even an ordinary, non-tv personality can have viewers.
i made a fuckin smoothie and 150 people gave a shit.
this is revolutionary.
keep saying what you’re saying, keep ranting and raving and vlogging.
people will listen.
and you will be the media.
not ABC or MTV.
this is the goal for each and every one of us.
we’re all on the same page.
remember this…
wtf verdi?
Josh: you didn’t mention me. fine! I’m going to go sit at the freak table. you go and be “popular.” see ya later. mphf.
wait… Josh I didn’t mean it. Take me with you! I want people to care about me cleaning my shoes damnit! I want to sit at the cool table… please…
Hey wait a minute… OK I was mentioned but not part of the Vloggers A-List. What the heck dude? Dude, get your A-listers right. (HA!! That’s funny!)
And what’s this I hear about a cruise ship? Jay and Ryanne’s love shack isn’t a boat, dude. And I know it look like I chillin’ in the Mediterranian somehwere, but that’s just an apt. complex in OC.
And because everyone (well all the A-listers) are leaving multiple comments. I am too damn it.
Aaron
Vloggers are the most non-elitist group online. Funk Bloggers and Podcasters, Vloggers are so non-elitist. You want in man. You’re in!!! We are a legit community and you are a brother. We need to get some grandma and grandpa’s up in here.
Karma, your an a lister in my book.
>>> I wish my arm was a little longer because when I videotape myself the camera is too close and it makes my big nose look even bigger. So yeah, I need longer arms and longer legs.
I hear you. I always chop my chin off in all my videos. I think my arms are too long for the videoblogger arm length shot.
this is was an awesome rant, it pefectly describes some of the things i’ve been feeling and i made a vlog to reply, it’ll be uploaded in the next 30 mins
when you think about it, you realise that the top people don’t care who is more popular than who, but it’s certainly something that appears straight away, that some people are much more popular, but that’s because they’ve been doing it longer and keeping at it, so you’ve just got to do the same, which is what i plan on doing
OK… last thing.
I hate feedburner counters. I too am always visiting that little no. in the corner of my website. I remember when I got over 100 last week, I started crying. “God, I’m in the 100 club. Thank you sweet Jesus.” Then like 25 people left me and now I’m at 75 or so. I was sad. It’s been a roller coaster of week, bro. Who took my 25… Ryanne, Verdi, Jay, Goldstein, Karma, I want them back. Or maybe Josh leo: Dude, why’s your feedburner inflated this week?
Oh and comments. I love comments. I am a comment pimp. Mainly because I love to hear what everyone has to say. I’m freakin’ turned on by comments. Kinky, I know.
Aaron
thevoiz.com
what’s up with that topher? interupting my commenting string. Oh well.
well when i started writing it, you’d only made the one, i didn’t know you were gonna continue
and it took me 10 minutes to write it?
Hey Josh. I like your stuff. I hear what you are saying about the cool thing about vlogging is that it’s just a kind of conversational communication. It’s a powerful concept. I feel the power of that.
And while I like that style of video, I am also, much of the time, consciously trying to craft stuff that is primarily designed to be entertaining and funny. Sometimes this means assuming a persona that is kind of me, but with certain aspects really accentuated or downplayed. It’s not always the “real” me (if there even is such a thing. I don’t know if I buy that there is one “real” me), and that’s the way I like to do it.
I dig the friends I’m making and the window into everyone’s worlds. It also happens that one of my goals is to be a professional entertainer/artist/writer. Videoblogging is an awesome way to build my skills and find an audience.
The numbers for me at this point are not huge. Note, I don’t put my feed count thing on my page. That’s cause I’m not getting 5 zillion subscribers! You know when I break 100 subscribers, it will be there in lurid day glow flashing colors. But I am getting some viewers and I’m learning a ton. I just want to keep working, keep learning, keep getting better, and I assume as I do that in videoblogging live performance, TV, and whatever other avenues I pursue, numbers will rise as I get better and get myself out there more. This may or may not work out for me, but I am going for it.
I think that you are onto something–the first movers, be it in business, the arts, or whatever, tend to have a built in advantage over those who come later. That said, the cool kids at the lunch table will be tomorrows nerds if they start putting out lame vlogs. And the nerds of today will be the popular kids of tomorrow if they are focused on creating stuff that other people really dig.
But in the end being popular is not the important thing, unless it helps you achieve some goal. My goal is to make a living with my writing, art and performance, but that is not for everybody. I value the sharing that’s going on, be it plain old conversation, or deviously constructed entertainment. Let a thousand flowers bloom, and if you have hay fever, watch out for the pollen. I don’t know what that last sentence means, but it just seemed right somehow.
this is one of the best crafted videos in a while.
another vlogging classic.
in videoblogging, the newest person is most important.
The goal of our group is to spread videoblogging so far and wide that we become forgotten.
if you want everyone to know something, post it the the group:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/videoblogging/
and i admit that im a stat addict.
and comments are what keep me going.
admit it.
Damn my work and their blocking archive.org on their proxy servers. I guess I’ll have to wait until I get home, because I don’t feel like being a geek and circumventing those restrictions. “Ah, circumvent?,” you say. “This guy must be a total geek.” Luckily, since I’m videoblogging, you can see for yourself, I am a total geek. Anyways, I’m sure I’ll like this Josh, I’ve liked everything else you’ve done so far. Hell, I might even clean out my car this weekend (probably not). I’m sure I’ll have something interesting to say once I get home and have a chance to watch this.
I’ve noticed that my left eyelid sinks down lower than my right one. Looks like I’ve been punched in it.
This is a great video. I came here because Jonny G posted it to the big list. Now I’ll never leave. You’re in my bookmarks.
I am at work now and I have not been able to see the vlog entry but I still want to comment because I get an image of the topic from the other comments and I don’t want to seem like some prick that never comments (I am at work, it is 2.30 AM, i will work untill 7 AM and who knows I might be so tired then that I will just crash in bed and not get up before 5 PM - dizzy and with zero orientation - and then I suppose you might think i am being some arrogant a-list vlogger that dont want to comment but thats as far away from the truth as possible. at least i never Mean to be arrogant, as i suppose 95% of all people on this world never mean to be arrogant. ok the number might be smaller, ok, lets say 90% of all people are not arrogant pricks
lets have fun with those 90%! let’s explore this whole medium, let’s build something that can last. ok i will comment again, mwaha, i want some comments here too. my personal ranting space - and I haven’t even seen the vlog entry yet!
Raymond
http://dltq.blogs.com/vlog
to be honest, time and habits are my personal greatest barriers. one thing is to suddenly see an exciting new voice in the vlogosphere - yourself, or luxomedia, or others - another thing is to break my ageold habits of visiting the same old guys (michael verdi, jay dedman, ryanne hodson, mica scalin, dylan (she doesnt post as often these days so in fact i visit her vlog more seldom now))
attention management is something I am Very interested in, along with the whole attention craving we all have. Aaron Flores is honest about it: “I’m a comment pimp!” Hahahaha, me too! I LOVE it when i get some feedback on my vlog entries. Did you like it, hate it, find it irrelevant?
Time - it’s all about time. I guess so many of us - in society in general - are so swamped with things and every thing demands our attention. Commercials, studies, girlfriend/boyfriend, work, tv, radio, friends calling, looads of email to answer, websites to visit, vlogs to see, vlogs to comment to, etcetc. I have myself begun using del.icio.us more as a way of giving comments to sites - i guess i will start commenting vlog entries this way. Whenever i see a vlog entry, i will make it a habit to just click that “del” button in my firefox, and enter a few comments in the fields or tags, and then send it off, then somewhere on my infocloud i will make public what my common tag for all these vlogs commenting is - lets say.. hmm - i will call it vlogsurf - ok there you go, from now on please visit http://del.icio.us/dltq/vlogsurf if you want to and you will see my comments to vlogs I have seen, with a link to the videoblog entry (the referring blog entry, not the media file URL). i think that for me, this will work better somehow. it makes it quicker for me - it collects all the vlogs i see in one place, and it collects my comments about them. sure, we all want the comments to be on our OWN space - but oh well, that will come later as the folksonomy trends get more developed.
Hey dude, well, if it makes you feel any more “important” I had honestly NEVER heard of such a thing as a vlog before in all my life, till stumbling on yours, courtesy of the “next blog” button. Intriguing stuff. So if nothing else you have the distinction of introducing me to this ‘brand new’ medium…even if it is at the community theater level.
I won’t be doing a vlog anytime soon. I have no camera and I’m a broke ass law student just tryin to make it in this crazy world (to get hired it’s probably best that I don’t associate my face with my rants). But I’ll probably start checkin out other people’s.
Cheers man.
This is a fantastic video!
I think its the ANT pre-load list that may make videoblogging seem so clique-ish. Believe me, that was never the intention. When we started ANT, there were no video feeds out there. No one could figure out the enclosure thing. I even wrote my own plugin for MovableType to generate enclosures, but that didn’t work for everyone who was using Blogger, and it was just too hard to explain to people.
Then FeedBurner made the whole thing easier, and we worked hard to educate people. There was a lot of resistance. A lot of people didn’t want to be bothered with RSS and did not appreciate much of the tech-talk on the videoblogging list. Why should I care so much about my feed when its really my site where people should watch and comment?
Now, its almost impossible to distinguish tech-talk from the rest. RSS has become an integral part of the videoblogging process.
When ANT launched at Vloggercon in January, we finally had about 20 feeds that we packed into the default install. We did this because we knew people would want to watch videos right away when they’ve downloaded it, and we had no way of cataloging or searching for video feeds. So this is what we did, for better or worse…
I agree, this default list does not highlight the amazing diversity and explosion of videoblog content that has since erupted, nor could it. A directory would be better, but still has enormous limitations.
We’re currently working on a few things that will make it easier to find videos… we’re building a tagging API, like del.icio.us or Flickr, so that you will be able to tag videos in ANT and then browse and subscribe to tags. We hope that this will remove the need for the default list in many ways and become a real benefit to users. But honestly, we aren’t sure what will happen. I don’t think anyone can be.
oh, another thing… i don’t know if FeedBurner subscriber stats are really to be believed. Plus preloading some of those feeds in ANT may inflate those people’s stats too. But, just cuz people have subscribed, does not necessarily mean they’re watching…
Joshua that sounds fantastic! If I could subscribe to vlog-tags in ANT … … ! WOW.
ANT is going to hit the roof, and I hope you guys will get wildly successful and be able to do what you want with the medium without one day suddenly being hampered by “ouch, ok, i have to work at wal-mart for the next 3 years, no time for vlogging”- or similar. Nobody knows where this is going, true, but WE are paving the path. The lot of us, every voice in the vlogosphere. Personally i hate the “a-listers” thing. Sure, I like being mentioned as well, we all love feedback, but to me this is not about ME. This is about the ideas, the concepts, the development of this great great medium that I personally discovered december 23rd last year or so when I went to metafilter for the first time and there saw Dylan Verdis videoblog mentioned, saw that, and was hooked, and then saw Ryanne Hodsons “super 8 opera” vlog entry and was not only hooked but said to myself “ok I WANT to learn how to do that”, and the rest is not not not history, but the rest is in itself a wild rollercoaster ride for me. just one month after i saw my first videoblog I paid from my own student economy to travel to New York - i really couldnt afford it - it made me broke for months after - but i really felt i needed to go, and i went, and i loved it, and in a way that trip has changed my whole life. yes, i know it sounds pathetic.
/rant
First off, The editing in that was insane. it flowed like none other.
You some up so well how i have felt recently. when i saw you mentioned me and had a link, i just got all warm and fuzzy inside. its like what you said about comments times 1000. Thats the kind of community that vlogging is all about. After this post my average visits per day went from 19 to 79. I just like to know that what i do is seen.
It is insane to see how many people have commented on this in such a short period of time. It shows how the “popularity contest” is unlike middle school. The vloggers that everyone knows and loves do pay attention to the new kid.
keep on ranting. that was awesome. i made my own rant(not quite so awesome) on your rant from “Vlog on Vlog” which will be up shortly..
.Phil
Mind if I row my little rickety little rowboat up alongside your tug boat? Really nice post.
Wow, there sure are a lot of comments on this page!
Verdi/Aaron, I read your comments about wanting longer arms. I’m 6′4″ and my arms are so long I seem too far away from the camera using the “arms length” shot. Oh well.
This is fucking awesome Josh!!!! I hope one day one of my videos will get this many comments.
I like your video blogging.
In your video,Blogging is real. This sentense is good.Blog is full of positive interest of many people. It is deference to the Media News.
Have fun.
*two thumbs up*
dear kengo.
actually, josh, was talking about vlogs. v as in voodoo. Check it out.
.Phil
A few points
a) Josh, You kick ass
b) A-list my ass, there are only those who’ve been doing it a bit longer. Than there’s those silly defaults in ANT, a throw back to when you could count the number of vloggers on your fingers and toes. I really hope the next version of ANT will have a directory with just a flat list alphabetical list of everyone that can be updated daily through meefedia this will resolve any evil centralization. We love vlogging because it isn’t elitest. Down with the A-list. Let’s leave that one with regular blogs.
c) Certainly you’re popularity in the last 24 hours has taught you that you’re the a-list of the hour.
d) It’s funny how something so simple as a little button can spark a sort of competition. Should we remove them?
f) I blogged the best of my response at the following url.
http://mmeiser.com/blog/2005/04/vlog-on-vlog-josh-leo-makes-manifesto.html
OK, so following up on my comment earlier, you totally rock dude. I was one of your 10 feedburner subs! This was in my Ant waiting for me from last night when I got home. I’ll have a follow up post in my vlog hopefully on Saturday (I’ll be filming my follow up and another vlog post tomorrow and I’ll spend most of Saturday editing them). Seriously, you were the first Vlog I subscribed to that wasn’t an Ant pre-load.
So I’m fairly new to this thing, but I’ve been doing the Internet thing for 10 years. There’s some things I think we need to address now before things become too large and unmanageable and the signal to noise gets too bad. This will be in my vlog post coming up. Keep up the good work!
Let’s go, only 7 comments to go to push him to 50!
very funny - but way too long. I just don’t have the attention span for most the vlogs you kids make today, back in the olde days we kept em short, we didnt know anyone would watch or comment. we were too shy to talk into the camera. we were very very alone and we didn’t care. Seems like you figured out the trick - name drop name drop like there’s no tomorrow! but seriously, It’s the little tugboat that pulls the big ship, right? Mica
I’m with Mica on the length. I started out doing 4-5 minute clips and now I’m trying to keep them close to a minute. Somehow, the more I take away the better they get. That said, it’s a good challenge to make something longer and try to hold peoples’ attention. But maybe try to edit stuff down to something really short, just to see what that is like.
As for her point on the name dropping—I think it’s a smart tactic if you want to get traffic, but you’ve got to have something compelling once the traffic gets to you. And you do have that, so rock on.
I am glad that you started vlogging. It has taken the old semi computer savy brother I used to know, and changed him into someone who I now fear because you are learning more than me. Keep doing what your doin man.
Great Video. The lessons were spot on. 2 of them stood out to me more then others. Like the dont look at the screen, look into the lense one. I’ve been told constantly for the last 3 and a half months to stop that. I’ve almost got the hang of it now. In my latest videos. I barely do it.
The other lesson that most applied to me was the going to bed late one. Im sure some people think i never sleep. Im always up.
Your right videoblogging is a life style. My whole life currently revolves around my video blog. I cant do anything without planning.
I’ll try and do a video response this weekend.
- Ian
Wow!
That’s a lot of comments.
So I went away on vacation, came back to over 900 unread emails and over a thousand unread blog posts.
I spent a bunch of time trying to get through it all.
I realized that being outside on vaction is better than sitting in front of a computer reading blogs.
I think I subscribe to too many. Bloglines makes it too easy to add another blog to my subscription list.
Videos on the otherhand are still a somewhat of a manageable level. It’s going to get to a point really soon where we’ll need to have a better way of sorting through it all.
So I just saw this video and loved it. Very nice job editing and it’s great to show people how something other than a talking head video is entertaining.
If you liked Carol and Steve go skiing, stay tuned for Carol and Steve on vacation.
It’s gonna be sooo good, as soon as I stop reading blogs nad watching videos, and start editing it.
Now I’m at the point where I want to get it posted but also want to try and spend some quality time editing it.
See you in ANT.
–Steve
aren’t you feeling the vlogging love?
Wow. That was amazing. Just… awesome. ^_^
I completly agree with your lesson four (four right?). I’ve wasted a whole lotta breath on my friends trying to explain what the heck I do.
Great.
~Dylan
Oh, lookie there. XD That’s ironic. I’ve gotten the 50th comment. Go me!!
Hi!I’m Lauren verdi. I am 8 years old. I watched your video post, it was really cool!
Hey, I left a vlog-reply here
popularity… feh.
My Feedburner count now says 3.141
I have Pi for an audience.
It’s on the bottom of my right navigation column on Bullemhead.com
One of the most important things I learned while workshopping with Frank Moore is that you don’t need to be invited to have a good time at the party. Once in the door, you’re responsible for starting the conversation.
And you sure started something with THIS post, whoa.
Now you’re talking.
Isn’t there a shitload to say?
Just walked in the door m’self.
Nice to meet ‘cha.
Brought a bottle of scotch and some flowers.
Wanna shot?
Nice vlog!!
What you said really hit home for me. I’ve actually been feeling this way, but didn’t know how to verbalize it, and i definately didn’t have the balls big enough to make a vlog about it!!
Thanks for sharing man!!
okay i have to jump in on this.
there are 500+ thoughts in my head right now. whewwww breathe.
1. GREAT rant. i loved it. many of the same feelings i have felt.
2. i’ve loved your videos. i just never took the time to comment because… i suck. okay.
3. i dig the new intro. the beat makes me think of a song by the format (”first single”).
4. i noticed your crooked-mouth-ness too, but i find it endearing.
5. i should video blog the rest of my thoughts now.
rad. keep it up josh.
Josh, thanks for sharing what you really feel. I don’t really notice your crooked mouth and those things, I’m just listening to what you have to say. Then again, I don’t watch fake-a** shows like American Idol, I watch vlogs! More, more!
Just jumping on the bandwagon to say “cool video man” from a fellow Michigander! Go Tigers!
Hey Josh, good vlog!
I’m just getting started myself, and was wondering if I was going to find myself in the same boat … the tug boat.
For lots of reasons I haven’t vlogged yet (except for the teasers I’ve put up to … tease … those people already reading my text blog). But look forward to it.
Keep on vlogging, I’m watching … and soon I’ll be the lil’ guy mentioning you in my a-list rant.
- Dave
http://wwww.davidmeade.com
Rest assured my friend, you are being watched… I’m not.
amazing video. congratulations for all the videos i found in this weblog, they rock!
This is an awesome video, and I agree completely with every aspect of your rants, one scene made me motivated and really feeling like I was part of something great. Cheers to you!
I’ve learned much about myself while vlogging, thats why I started the project, I have changed a lot within a short period of time. Glad someone out there shares so much of what I am going through too!!
will watch the rest of ur vids now, I saved this one in my ‘favorite vlog’s archive.
Oh and, have another comment for good luck
FYI, I added your RSS feed to Thunderbird, and I’m pretty sure it’s working
I’ll let you know once another vlog is published here.
(sorry about broken link in last comment I had one too many w’s)
- Dave
http://www.davidmeade.com
okay - you have countless comments now - I’m killing for 4! -you could not be more validated -but before this post, I totally empathize with you.

(FYI, thunderbird did work with the RSS feed.)
Je-sus. You’re like in some sort of secret platinum 007 AAA-list, if you go buy # of comments! WTF?!
As usual I’m late to the party. This was a truly awesome vid. I’ve been seeing so many awesome vids lately, it makes me so happy.
I recently told a little story about when I got into blogs. It was 2002, which I thought was late to THAT party. They started exploding (sorta) after 9/11, media stories and everything. But when I interviewed Anil Dash (now with TypePad) he said “I thought I was coming late to blogging… there were already 100 people doing it, I thought the fad was over…” !!!
My feeling is, there IS NO SUCH THING as “too late.” There is no bad time to express yourself! Everyday is a good day to start expressing yourself to whoever will here you. Yeah, the early adopters have a head start so they have impressive stats - doesn’t matter.
Dan Gillmor says “I’ll bet you the value-per-reader is far greater on someone’s baby blog than BoingBoing.”
Anyway, blah blah blah… keep kicking ass. For jesus.
Ha.. Yes, Vlogging has caused quite a few sleepless nights.
-Another viewer
Well, what can I say that hasn’t been said already… I just started on this things of technology and your vlog was the third vlog I watched, and I like it a lot…. Like you said, everything is about the community, not the popularity…I just hope that you don’t fall into the Castro Syndrome, and let yourself seduce for the power of fame and power, and that you keep doing this che Guevara’s way…For the people, to the people…..
Oh, sorry, I thought I entered the yahoo group…
It looks like I missed the boat for the best time to comment on this post… for awhile there it looked like everyone was in your room… I just caught your post on omn. One of the things I don’t like about that system is that it doesn’t easily allow for commenting, but that’s another rant.
“I got into vlogging [because] I was kind of in a blog slump…”
“I want to see baby puppetry…”
priceless…
You forgot Chris Weagel from human-dog.com! This reminded me of his Entry #048. You guys should collaborate!
The lessons were a great touch.
Josh,
I set ANT up to download a bunch of crap over the weekend, and when I went to go look - your “1st_Rant” was the first one I watched because it was alphabetized to the top of the list. Crafty, motherf*cker!
Thankfully you pushed your way to the top of the list, but you had some insight to share. Nicely done, dude. I’m gonna go watch some more!
Dam! Talk about not being famous. I feel this post will be a speck of dried flake of skin of a 56 y.o. on her 6th trip to Hawaii with a tinge of spf 49 on it amongst this sand of commentary.
But what the heck. Since I’ve discovered video blogs from my interest in short indie films online, I also have extended my curfew to the whee early mornings. Who knew, I have birds outside my apt that chirps at 337 AM!
Good stuff keep it up kid. Maybe when I figure out how to vlog I will vlog you back.
BH
thx sooo much for sharing of yourself that way -
trully wonderful..
Josh,
I think you hit the nail on the head.
If this is what it takes to get “attention” then I feel sorry for those that follow. I have experinced this frist hand as I was labeled as having “just a website” and was excluded.
The contents of “videoblogging” are explained as “undefined” yet it is very defined. Keep up with you struggle and good luck.
76 comments! What a stud! I note that you don’t even have the feed counter on, probably because you broke it with so many feeds!
This is a great rant and I encountered it somehow in ant, and I think that, somehow, Jay posted it … anyway … I immediately added you to ant … keep it up … you’re my new vlog idol
…
you made me pick up my camera again, thanks for the inspiration! a salute from Amsterdam
New to viewing Vlogs - I must say I get excited when any new form of media emerges. Good job pioneering. But I’m wondering why looking into other peoples lives is fascinating. Is it because it gives us a better idea of where we fit into everything? Or because we can better identify with it - it’s more real? Or is it interesting just because we have never been able to do it before? Will the excitement of vlogs wear off 5 years from now? Keep it up.
VLOGGYWOOD, Here I Come!
:)
Yeah Rock on!
I just want to let everyone know that this vlog is part of Operation Infinite Justice.
Excellent post Josh!
GOSH YOURE CUTE!
Very well done.
Well edited.
Enjoyed the music.
Liked the clips from other blogs.
Doing a review of vlogs before I dive in — lots of good tips.
Thanks.
Dude, this is a classic that I missed. Glad that Jay posted it on moment showing so I saw it. Needless to say I’ve been a big fan dude. I wanna be doing a Xolo.tv post on you soon becuase your stuff is always great. I laughed my ass off when you cleaned your car. Dude that was NASTY!
I identified so strongly with this video - I think I’m at the same point in my vlog that you were when you made this. Except a little more shy about “ranting”. thanks for your honesty and bravery and clarity.
-serra
Josh, Been watching for several months now, but going back to one of my first vlog mov’s to leave you this. Your thoughts are why I’m leaving comments to most videos I watch. You’re sharing something with me, I’m obviously taking it in, why not share my thoughts and give something back, right?

“once you start videoblogging, you won’t go to bed before 3am.” This is SO TRUE. Dammit, I can’t stop laughing.
Well said Josh…I like that vlog post enough to start checking out the rest of your posts…got a new fan!
Thanks
Johnie
Greate rant Josh I really like your style and you remind me a little of Max Headroom. I havent yet put myself in the picture and remain behind the camera for now, I wonder why?
I’d forgotten how amazing this rant was. Truly a classic vlog critique for the ages…
Hey, great rant!
Great rant! Way to go Josh. Definitely some classic comments that’ll be reused in the future. Keep ‘em coming.
[…] You will also become familiar with social networks around web video, where people connect online and in-person. You will learn about how video connnects with blogging, and how people have conversations over time using video.? If this sounds like a lot of ground we’re covering, you’re right, it is! There is so much exciting stuff going on, and we’re going to explore far and wide. At the same time, I will break things down into easy-to-understand chunks, so no one will be overwhelmed. […]

[…] I remember when Josh Leo first started vlogging. His first big hit was a videoblog where he spent a lot of work editing together a video, then leaving comments on the vlogs of people that he mentioned in that video. The permalink for that video is here: http://www.joshleo.com/vlog/2005/04/14/vlog-on-vlog/ - I recommend you to watch it. It is still a good view. […]
I know this is a really old vlog but an amazing one at that. I’m in your shoes at that time at this moment. crazy to see where you are now compared to back then.
Hey there, Josh. I’ve been enjoying your blog since you first uploaded this episode two years ago. I started doing a podcast about two weeks before you started vlogging (March 11, 2005). I do about 1-4 podcasts a month, and I focus on the music industry and record a song for each show. I know exactly what you mean about readership being a popularity contest. I’m not sure, I must be in some crazy genre all by myself because I haven’t been able to keep more than 80 readers at a time for two years. Lucky for you, you’re probably well above that. I’m going to keep at it. I really like podcasting and connecting with people is my favorite part of all of it. I only hear from about 3 of my readers, but hey, that’s three people I’ve made a connection with. I’m thinking of replacing my podcast with a vlog soon. It might be more commercially viable with my subject matter. This podcast was my favorite until “Popping the Question”. I love the show. Keep up the great work.
