Vlog on Vlog

Vlogs…What an exciting new development I find myself in the middle of! I have been thinking a lot about Vlogs and their implications. This is my first rant video… I hope you enjoy it. I would love if this started a video conversation, in fact I encourage it. (Sorry to all my non-vlogging friends, but this post is pretty much geared towards those who are familiar with the Vlogosphere) I don’t mean to say that the popular vloggers are less approachable, I just think that they are somehow more powerful…

One of the most important things I learned while workshopping with Frank Moore is that you don’t need to be invited to have a good time at the party. Once in the door, you’re responsible for starting the conversation.

And you sure started something with THIS post, whoa.

    Now you’re talking.

Isn’t there a shitload to say?

Just walked in the door m’self.

    Nice to meet ‘cha.

Brought a bottle of scotch and some flowers.

    Wanna shot?

  6. Ivettza says:

    Nice vlog!!
What you said really hit home for me. I’ve actually been feeling this way, but didn’t know how to verbalize it, and i definately didn’t have the balls big enough to make a vlog about it!!
    Thanks for sharing man!!

  7. annie! says:

okay i have to jump in on this.
there are 500+ thoughts in my head right now. whewwww breathe.

    1. GREAT rant. i loved it. many of the same feelings i have felt.
    2. i’ve loved your videos. i just never took the time to comment because… i suck. okay.
    3. i dig the new intro. the beat makes me think of a song by the format (“first single”).
    4. i noticed your crooked-mouth-ness too, but i find it endearing.
    5. i should video blog the rest of my thoughts now.

rad. keep it up josh. :)

  8. R says:

Josh, thanks for sharing what you really feel. I don’t really notice your crooked mouth and those things, I’m just listening to what you have to say. Then again, I don’t watch fake-a** shows like American Idol, I watch vlogs! More, more!

  9. Matt says:

Just jumping on the bandwagon to say “cool video man” from a fellow Michigander! Go Tigers!

  10. David Meade says:

    Hey Josh, good vlog! :-)

I’m just getting started myself, and was wondering if I was going to find myself in the same boat … the tug boat. :-P

For lots of reasons I haven’t vlogged yet (except for the teasers I’ve put up to … tease … those people already reading my text blog). But look forward to it.

Keep on vlogging, I’m watching … and soon I’ll be the lil’ guy mentioning you in my a-list rant. :-)

Rest assured my friend, you are being watched… I’m not.

  12. amazing video. congratulations for all the videos i found in this weblog, they rock!

  13. Stu says:

This is an awesome video, and I agree completely with every aspect of your rants, one scene made me motivated and really feeling like I was part of something great. Cheers to you!

I’ve learned much about myself while vlogging, thats why I started the project, I have changed a lot within a short period of time. Glad someone out there shares so much of what I am going through too!!

will watch the rest of ur vids now, I saved this one in my ‘favorite vlog’s archive.

  14. Stu says:

Oh and, have another comment for good luck :)

  15. David Meade says:

FYI, I added your RSS feed to Thunderbird, and I’m pretty sure it’s working :-) I’ll let you know once another vlog is published here.

  17. David Meade says:

(FYI, thunderbird did work with the RSS feed.)

  18. Chuck Olsen says:

Je-sus. You’re like in some sort of secret platinum 007 AAA-list, if you go buy # of comments! WTF?!

As usual I’m late to the party. This was a truly awesome vid. I’ve been seeing so many awesome vids lately, it makes me so happy.

I recently told a little story about when I got into blogs. It was 2002, which I thought was late to THAT party. They started exploding (sorta) after 9/11, media stories and everything. But when I interviewed Anil Dash (now with TypePad) he said “I thought I was coming late to blogging… there were already 100 people doing it, I thought the fad was over…” !!!

My feeling is, there IS NO SUCH THING as “too late.” There is no bad time to express yourself! Everyday is a good day to start expressing yourself to whoever will here you. Yeah, the early adopters have a head start so they have impressive stats – doesn’t matter.

Dan Gillmor says “I’ll bet you the value-per-reader is far greater on someone’s baby blog than BoingBoing.”

Anyway, blah blah blah… keep kicking ass. For jesus.

Ha.. Yes, Vlogging has caused quite a few sleepless nights.

  20. Well, what can I say that hasn’t been said already… I just started on this things of technology and your vlog was the third vlog I watched, and I like it a lot…. Like you said, everything is about the community, not the popularity…I just hope that you don’t fall into the Castro Syndrome, and let yourself seduce for the power of fame and power, and that you keep doing this che Guevara’s way…For the people, to the people…..

  21. Yves says:

Oh, sorry, I thought I entered the yahoo group…

It looks like I missed the boat for the best time to comment on this post… for awhile there it looked like everyone was in your room… I just caught your post on omn. One of the things I don’t like about that system is that it doesn’t easily allow for commenting, but that’s another rant.

“I got into vlogging [because] I was kind of in a blog slump…”
“I want to see baby puppetry…”
    priceless…

You forgot Chris Weagel from human-dog.com! This reminded me of his Entry #048. You guys should collaborate!

The lessons were a great touch.

  22. Steve Warren says:

    Josh,

I set ANT up to download a bunch of crap over the weekend, and when I went to go look – your “1st_Rant” was the first one I watched because it was alphabetized to the top of the list. Crafty, motherf*cker!

Thankfully you pushed your way to the top of the list, but you had some insight to share. Nicely done, dude. I’m gonna go watch some more!

  23. B says:

Dam! Talk about not being famous. I feel this post will be a speck of dried flake of skin of a 56 y.o. on her 6th trip to Hawaii with a tinge of spf 49 on it amongst this sand of commentary.

But what the heck. Since I’ve discovered video blogs from my interest in short indie films online, I also have extended my curfew to the whee early mornings. Who knew, I have birds outside my apt that chirps at 337 AM!

  24. Burton Hess says:

Good stuff keep it up kid. Maybe when I figure out how to vlog I will vlog you back.

    BH

  25. m-c says:

thx sooo much for sharing of yourself that way -
    trully wonderful..

  26. Mick I says:

    Josh,
I think you hit the nail on the head.
If this is what it takes to get “attention” then I feel sorry for those that follow. I have experinced this frist hand as I was labeled as having “just a website” and was excluded.
The contents of “videoblogging” are explained as “undefined” yet it is very defined. Keep up with you struggle and good luck.

  27. Richard says:

76 comments! What a stud! I note that you don’t even have the feed counter on, probably because you broke it with so many feeds!

This is a great rant and I encountered it somehow in ant, and I think that, somehow, Jay posted it … anyway … I immediately added you to ant … keep it up … you’re my new vlog idol :)

  28. mindcaster says:

you made me pick up my camera again, thanks for the inspiration! a salute from Amsterdam

  29. Kid Shovel says:

New to viewing Vlogs – I must say I get excited when any new form of media emerges. Good job pioneering. But I’m wondering why looking into other peoples lives is fascinating. Is it because it gives us a better idea of where we fit into everything? Or because we can better identify with it – it’s more real? Or is it interesting just because we have never been able to do it before? Will the excitement of vlogs wear off 5 years from now? Keep it up.

    Well edited.
    Enjoyed the music.
Liked the clips from other blogs.
Doing a review of vlogs before I dive in — lots of good tips.
    Thanks.

I identified so strongly with this video – I think I’m at the same point in my vlog that you were when you made this. Except a little more shy about “ranting”. thanks for your honesty and bravery and clarity.

Josh, Been watching for several months now, but going back to one of my first vlog mov’s to leave you this. Your thoughts are why I’m leaving comments to most videos I watch. You’re sharing something with me, I’m obviously taking it in, why not share my thoughts and give something back, right?
    B

  36. Susan says:

“once you start videoblogging, you won’t go to bed before 3am.” This is SO TRUE. Dammit, I can’t stop laughing. :D

  37. Johnie says:

Well said Josh…I like that vlog post enough to start checking out the rest of your posts…got a new fan!

    Thanks

Greate rant Josh I really like your style and you remind me a little of Max Headroom. I havent yet put myself in the picture and remain behind the camera for now, I wonder why?

  39. andy carvin says:

I know this is a really old vlog but an amazing one at that. I’m in your shoes at that time at this moment. crazy to see where you are now compared to back then.

  46. Brin says:

Hey there, Josh. I’ve been enjoying your blog since you first uploaded this episode two years ago. I started doing a podcast about two weeks before you started vlogging (March 11, 2005). I do about 1-4 podcasts a month, and I focus on the music industry and record a song for each show. I know exactly what you mean about readership being a popularity contest. I’m not sure, I must be in some crazy genre all by myself because I haven’t been able to keep more than 80 readers at a time for two years. Lucky for you, you’re probably well above that. I’m going to keep at it. I really like podcasting and connecting with people is my favorite part of all of it. I only hear from about 3 of my readers, but hey, that’s three people I’ve made a connection with. I’m thinking of replacing my podcast with a vlog soon. It might be more commercially viable with my subject matter. This podcast was my favorite until “Popping the Question”. I love the show. Keep up the great work.

  47. Brin says:

Oh hey. Look what day it is. Happy Anniversary.

  48. I think you have some potential, just keep giving it you all ok. I really do see big things in your future.
