Vlogs…What an exciting new development I find myself in the middle of! I have been thinking a lot about Vlogs and their implications. This is my first rant video… I hope you enjoy it. I would love if this started a video conversation, in fact I encourage it. (Sorry to all my non-vlogging friends, but this post is pretty much geared towards those who are familiar with the Vlogosphere) I don’t mean to say that the popular vloggers are less approachable, I just think that they are somehow more powerful…

this is was an awesome rant, it pefectly describes some of the things i’ve been feeling and i made a vlog to reply, it’ll be uploaded in the next 30 mins
when you think about it, you realise that the top people don’t care who is more popular than who, but it’s certainly something that appears straight away, that some people are much more popular, but that’s because they’ve been doing it longer and keeping at it, so you’ve just got to do the same, which is what i plan on doing
OK… last thing.
I hate feedburner counters. I too am always visiting that little no. in the corner of my website. I remember when I got over 100 last week, I started crying. “God, I’m in the 100 club. Thank you sweet Jesus.” Then like 25 people left me and now I’m at 75 or so. I was sad. It’s been a roller coaster of week, bro. Who took my 25… Ryanne, Verdi, Jay, Goldstein, Karma, I want them back. Or maybe Josh leo: Dude, why’s your feedburner inflated this week?
Oh and comments. I love comments. I am a comment pimp. Mainly because I love to hear what everyone has to say. I’m freakin’ turned on by comments. Kinky, I know.

Hey Josh. I like your stuff. I hear what you are saying about the cool thing about vlogging is that it’s just a kind of conversational communication. It’s a powerful concept. I feel the power of that.
And while I like that style of video, I am also, much of the time, consciously trying to craft stuff that is primarily designed to be entertaining and funny. Sometimes this means assuming a persona that is kind of me, but with certain aspects really accentuated or downplayed. It’s not always the “real” me (if there even is such a thing. I don’t know if I buy that there is one “real” me), and that’s the way I like to do it.
I dig the friends I’m making and the window into everyone’s worlds. It also happens that one of my goals is to be a professional entertainer/artist/writer. Videoblogging is an awesome way to build my skills and find an audience.
The numbers for me at this point are not huge. Note, I don’t put my feed count thing on my page. That’s cause I’m not getting 5 zillion subscribers! You know when I break 100 subscribers, it will be there in lurid day glow flashing colors. But I am getting some viewers and I’m learning a ton. I just want to keep working, keep learning, keep getting better, and I assume as I do that in videoblogging live performance, TV, and whatever other avenues I pursue, numbers will rise as I get better and get myself out there more. This may or may not work out for me, but I am going for it.
I think that you are onto something–the first movers, be it in business, the arts, or whatever, tend to have a built in advantage over those who come later. That said, the cool kids at the lunch table will be tomorrows nerds if they start putting out lame vlogs. And the nerds of today will be the popular kids of tomorrow if they are focused on creating stuff that other people really dig.
But in the end being popular is not the important thing, unless it helps you achieve some goal. My goal is to make a living with my writing, art and performance, but that is not for everybody. I value the sharing that’s going on, be it plain old conversation, or deviously constructed entertainment. Let a thousand flowers bloom, and if you have hay fever, watch out for the pollen. I don’t know what that last sentence means, but it just seemed right somehow.

to be honest, time and habits are my personal greatest barriers. one thing is to suddenly see an exciting new voice in the vlogosphere - yourself, or luxomedia, or others - another thing is to break my ageold habits of visiting the same old guys (michael verdi, jay dedman, ryanne hodson, mica scalin, dylan (she doesnt post as often these days so in fact i visit her vlog more seldom now))
attention management is something I am Very interested in, along with the whole attention craving we all have. Aaron Flores is honest about it: “I’m a comment pimp!” Hahahaha, me too! I LOVE it when i get some feedback on my vlog entries. Did you like it, hate it, find it irrelevant?
Time - it’s all about time. I guess so many of us - in society in general - are so swamped with things and every thing demands our attention. Commercials, studies, girlfriend/boyfriend, work, tv, radio, friends calling, looads of email to answer, websites to visit, vlogs to see, vlogs to comment to, etcetc. I have myself begun using del.icio.us more as a way of giving comments to sites - i guess i will start commenting vlog entries this way. Whenever i see a vlog entry, i will make it a habit to just click that “del” button in my firefox, and enter a few comments in the fields or tags, and then send it off, then somewhere on my infocloud i will make public what my common tag for all these vlogs commenting is - lets say.. hmm - i will call it vlogsurf - ok there you go, from now on please visit http://del.icio.us/dltq/vlogsurf if you want to and you will see my comments to vlogs I have seen, with a link to the videoblog entry (the referring blog entry, not the media file URL). i think that for me, this will work better somehow. it makes it quicker for me - it collects all the vlogs i see in one place, and it collects my comments about them. sure, we all want the comments to be on our OWN space - but oh well, that will come later as the folksonomy trends get more developed.
Hey dude, well, if it makes you feel any more “important” I had honestly NEVER heard of such a thing as a vlog before in all my life, till stumbling on yours, courtesy of the “next blog” button. Intriguing stuff. So if nothing else you have the distinction of introducing me to this ‘brand new’ medium…even if it is at the community theater level.
I won’t be doing a vlog anytime soon. I have no camera and I’m a broke ass law student just tryin to make it in this crazy world (to get hired it’s probably best that I don’t associate my face with my rants). But I’ll probably start checkin out other people’s.

I think its the ANT pre-load list that may make videoblogging seem so clique-ish. Believe me, that was never the intention. When we started ANT, there were no video feeds out there. No one could figure out the enclosure thing. I even wrote my own plugin for MovableType to generate enclosures, but that didn’t work for everyone who was using Blogger, and it was just too hard to explain to people.
Then FeedBurner made the whole thing easier, and we worked hard to educate people. There was a lot of resistance. A lot of people didn’t want to be bothered with RSS and did not appreciate much of the tech-talk on the videoblogging list. Why should I care so much about my feed when its really my site where people should watch and comment?
Now, its almost impossible to distinguish tech-talk from the rest. RSS has become an integral part of the videoblogging process.
When ANT launched at Vloggercon in January, we finally had about 20 feeds that we packed into the default install. We did this because we knew people would want to watch videos right away when they’ve downloaded it, and we had no way of cataloging or searching for video feeds. So this is what we did, for better or worse…
I agree, this default list does not highlight the amazing diversity and explosion of videoblog content that has since erupted, nor could it. A directory would be better, but still has enormous limitations.
We’re currently working on a few things that will make it easier to find videos… we’re building a tagging API, like del.icio.us or Flickr, so that you will be able to tag videos in ANT and then browse and subscribe to tags. We hope that this will remove the need for the default list in many ways and become a real benefit to users. But honestly, we aren’t sure what will happen. I don’t think anyone can be.
oh, another thing… i don’t know if FeedBurner subscriber stats are really to be believed. Plus preloading some of those feeds in ANT may inflate those people’s stats too. But, just cuz people have subscribed, does not necessarily mean they’re watching…

ANT is going to hit the roof, and I hope you guys will get wildly successful and be able to do what you want with the medium without one day suddenly being hampered by “ouch, ok, i have to work at wal-mart for the next 3 years, no time for vlogging”- or similar. Nobody knows where this is going, true, but WE are paving the path. The lot of us, every voice in the vlogosphere. Personally i hate the “a-listers” thing. Sure, I like being mentioned as well, we all love feedback, but to me this is not about ME. This is about the ideas, the concepts, the development of this great great medium that I personally discovered december 23rd last year or so when I went to metafilter for the first time and there saw Dylan Verdis videoblog mentioned, saw that, and was hooked, and then saw Ryanne Hodsons “super 8 opera” vlog entry and was not only hooked but said to myself “ok I WANT to learn how to do that”, and the rest is not not not history, but the rest is in itself a wild rollercoaster ride for me. just one month after i saw my first videoblog I paid from my own student economy to travel to New York - i really couldnt afford it - it made me broke for months after - but i really felt i needed to go, and i went, and i loved it, and in a way that trip has changed my whole life. yes, i know it sounds pathetic.

You some up so well how i have felt recently. when i saw you mentioned me and had a link, i just got all warm and fuzzy inside. its like what you said about comments times 1000. Thats the kind of community that vlogging is all about. After this post my average visits per day went from 19 to 79. I just like to know that what i do is seen.
It is insane to see how many people have commented on this in such a short period of time. It shows how the “popularity contest” is unlike middle school. The vloggers that everyone knows and loves do pay attention to the new kid.

OK, so following up on my comment earlier, you totally rock dude. I was one of your 10 feedburner subs! This was in my Ant waiting for me from last night when I got home. I’ll have a follow up post in my vlog hopefully on Saturday (I’ll be filming my follow up and another vlog post tomorrow and I’ll spend most of Saturday editing them). Seriously, you were the first Vlog I subscribed to that wasn’t an Ant pre-load.
So I’m fairly new to this thing, but I’ve been doing the Internet thing for 10 years. There’s some things I think we need to address now before things become too large and unmanageable and the signal to noise gets too bad. This will be in my vlog post coming up. Keep up the good work!

I’m with Mica on the length. I started out doing 4-5 minute clips and now I’m trying to keep them close to a minute. Somehow, the more I take away the better they get. That said, it’s a good challenge to make something longer and try to hold peoples’ attention. But maybe try to edit stuff down to something really short, just to see what that is like.
As for her point on the name dropping—I think it’s a smart tactic if you want to get traffic, but you’ve got to have something compelling once the traffic gets to you. And you do have that, so rock on.
I am glad that you started vlogging. It has taken the old semi computer savy brother I used to know, and changed him into someone who I now fear because you are learning more than me. Keep doing what your doin man.
Great Video. The lessons were spot on. 2 of them stood out to me more then others. Like the dont look at the screen, look into the lense one. I’ve been told constantly for the last 3 and a half months to stop that. I’ve almost got the hang of it now. In my latest videos. I barely do it.
The other lesson that most applied to me was the going to bed late one. Im sure some people think i never sleep. Im always up.
Your right videoblogging is a life style. My whole life currently revolves around my video blog. I cant do anything without planning.

That’s a lot of comments.
So I went away on vacation, came back to over 900 unread emails and over a thousand unread blog posts.
I spent a bunch of time trying to get through it all.
I realized that being outside on vaction is better than sitting in front of a computer reading blogs.
I think I subscribe to too many. Bloglines makes it too easy to add another blog to my subscription list.
Videos on the otherhand are still a somewhat of a manageable level. It’s going to get to a point really soon where we’ll need to have a better way of sorting through it all.
So I just saw this video and loved it. Very nice job editing and it’s great to show people how something other than a talking head video is entertaining.

As usual I’m late to the party. This was a truly awesome vid. I’ve been seeing so many awesome vids lately, it makes me so happy.
I recently told a little story about when I got into blogs. It was 2002, which I thought was late to THAT party. They started exploding (sorta) after 9/11, media stories and everything. But when I interviewed Anil Dash (now with TypePad) he said “I thought I was coming late to blogging… there were already 100 people doing it, I thought the fad was over…” !!!
My feeling is, there IS NO SUCH THING as “too late.” There is no bad time to express yourself! Everyday is a good day to start expressing yourself to whoever will here you. Yeah, the early adopters have a head start so they have impressive stats - doesn’t matter.
Dan Gillmor says “I’ll bet you the value-per-reader is far greater on someone’s baby blog than BoingBoing.”
Anyway, blah blah blah… keep kicking ass. For jesus.

Dam! Talk about not being famous. I feel this post will be a speck of dried flake of skin of a 56 y.o. on her 6th trip to Hawaii with a tinge of spf 49 on it amongst this sand of commentary.

New to viewing Vlogs - I must say I get excited when any new form of media emerges. Good job pioneering. But I’m wondering why looking into other peoples lives is fascinating. Is it because it gives us a better idea of where we fit into everything? Or because we can better identify with it - it’s more real? Or is it interesting just because we have never been able to do it before? Will the excitement of vlogs wear off 5 years from now? Keep it up.

Hey there, Josh. I’ve been enjoying your blog since you first uploaded this episode two years ago. I started doing a podcast about two weeks before you started vlogging (March 11, 2005). I do about 1-4 podcasts a month, and I focus on the music industry and record a song for each show. I know exactly what you mean about readership being a popularity contest. I’m not sure, I must be in some crazy genre all by myself because I haven’t been able to keep more than 80 readers at a time for two years. Lucky for you, you’re probably well above that. I’m going to keep at it. I really like podcasting and connecting with people is my favorite part of all of it. I only hear from about 3 of my readers, but hey, that’s three people I’ve made a connection with. I’m thinking of replacing my podcast with a vlog soon. It might be more commercially viable with my subject matter. This podcast was my favorite until “Popping the Question”. I love the show. Keep up the great work.
